NEW DOCUMENTARY PLUNDERS COLOURFUL HISTORY OF PIRATES AND PRIVATEERS IN ATLANTIC CANADA
Halifax, Nova Scotia - February 20, 2012 – Everyone knows about the Pirates of the Caribbean. Johnny Depp’s portrayal of pirate Jack Sparrow is already the stuff of movie legend. But what about the pirates of Atlantic Canada? Pirates and Privateers is a half hour documentary that explores the rough-and-tumble history of marine piracy in the Maritimes.
Hundreds of years ago, the secluded coves and inlets of the Maritimes were perfect hiding places for pirates avoiding detection by the King’s navy. And with the huge fishing industry, the Maritimes were a perfect hunting ground for supplies, ships and new recruits. Pirates and Privateers introduces the viewer to several notorious pirates who plundered Atlantic Canada, and tells a story that recalls the blunderbuss, the cutlass, evil deeds, and supposed buried treasure.
Not many Canadians know what is meant by the word “privateer”, even though privateering was a significant social and financial force in times of war, whether against the Spanish, the French, or the Americans during the War of 1812. Pirates and Privateers explains how the business of privateering worked, as practiced in one of Canada’s most successful privateering centres: Liverpool Nova Scotia.
Pirates and Privateers was written and directed by award-winning Halifax documentary-maker Geoff D’Eon, best known for his work on This Hour Has 22 Minutes and CBC Television’s Doc Zone. The documentary was produced by Edward Peill from Halifax-based Tell Tale Productions Inc.
“There are so many rich pirate stories in Atlantic Canada, it was hard to know which ones to pick. And how many times have we all heard that Stan Roger’s song Barrett’s Privateers,” says D’Eon. “It brings the house down every time, but it’s amazing how few people actually know what a privateer was. Hopefully, this documentary will clear up the confusion.”
Pirates and Privateers will have its world broadcast premiere on CBC Television’s Land & Sea on Sunday, March 4, 2012 at 12 Noon. Following the broadcast, the documentary can be watched on the CBC TV website at: www.cbc.ca/landandsea. Land & Sea is one of CBC’s longest running TV series and can be followed on Twitter: @cbclandandsea
Pirates and Privateers was produced in association with CBC TV with funding from Film NS, and Provincial and Federal tax credits.

Hank Snow Tribute to return to Queens County in 2013!
The Friends of Hank Snow Society would like to inform our friends, neighbours, and supporters of our upcoming plans for the annual Hank Snow Tribute and Hank Snow Home Town Museum.
In August 2012, the 22nd Annual Hank Snow Tribute will once again be held at the South Shore Exhibition grounds. In 2013, the Tribute is finally coming home to Queens County. Our special Relocation Committee is investigating solutions to bring the Tribute, a 4-day, 2,500-attendee music festival home. It takes an enormous amount of time and planning, along with a new identity, weekend format, RV parking and amenities, shuttle system, a new venue as well as dealing with funding and rising costs. The Hank Snow Tribute is the major fundraiser that earns operational revenue for the Hank Snow Home Town Museum.
This year we have begun the process of applying to join the Community Museum Assistance Program, a program organized through the Association of Nova Scotia Museums, that will provide some stability. We are meeting with local and regional government, businesses, and organizations to work together.
Most importantly, we want to hear from YOU, Queens County. Will you volunteer to help us bring the Tribute home? What new events could you see becoming part of the Tribute’s new identity? What musicians or bands would you love to see? YOU can help us make sure the 23rd Annual Hank Snow Tribute in Queens County is a success. Please email us at (info@hanksnow.com) or send us a letter to: PO Box 1419, Liverpool, NS, B0T 1K0. You can also check us out online atwww.hanksnow.com or “like” us on Facebook (Hank Snow Home Town Museum) for all the latest updates.

Autism Workshops
Child and Adolescent Services
January 2012
Dear parents & guardians
Staff at the Mental Health Clinic are going to offer a series of information sessions and video presentations about Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). These will be of particular interest to families of newly-diagnosed children, but all are welcome. Feel free to pass along the information to others who are involved with your child (babysitters, recreation leaders, etc) or anyone who may be interested. Even if you are still waiting for your child’s diagnostic assessment to be done, please join us.
The attached schedule shows the topics we will be covering. The sessions will start at 9:30 and run until 11:30 or 12:00 on Thursday mornings at the Dawson Center Conference room, starting on February 16th. We are making the sessions available via Telehealth to Queens General Hospital, the North Queens clinic in Caledonia, and at Fishermen’s Memorial Hospital.
Please call our team’s secretary, Alisa Zwicker, at 543-4604 ext. 2319 to let her know when and where you will be attending so we can prepare enough handout materials for everyone. You do not have to come to all of the sessions; just choose the ones of interest to you. Please Note: There have been new presentations and videos added to the schedule since last year, so check if there are new topics that may be of interest.
Finally, if you are interested in receiving material monthly about ASDs via e-mail newsletter, please let Paul Peters know by e-mailing him at ppeters@ssdha.nshealth.ca.
Sincerely,
Valerie MacDonald, PhD Paul Peters

Still time to vote for SQJHS. Help them win a class trip!!
VOTE BEFORE FRIDAY FEB 24th
SQJHS Grade 8 has entered the Canada's Coolest School Trip contest, as you may be aware. The voting method has changed a number of times, votes rolled back to zero to start over, so it has been an uphill battle. They really could use a boost if they are to keep in the top 10 and have their video make it to the judging round.
For those who want to vote but haven't, I thought I'd let you know that they have slipped into 13th spot! We now need 60 votes just to catch up with 10th place. Rallying community support now is important. Take 5 minutes to vote and let's show the big centers what the country folk can do when we band together. Share the site address with friends and family.
WE CAN DO THIS!! JUST 60 VOTES AWAY!!!! PLEASE HELP!!

Be a part of the 10to20 Project
Over the past 14 months, a small group of us having been working away on the 10 to 20 Project, the community pride/support local initiative that is a joint initiative of the Region of Queens, the South Queens Chamber of Commerce and the North Queens Board of Trade. In addition to seasonal posters and a regular column in the Advance, we have also helped stage some events in our area.
We are looking for some fresh blood and new ideas and some bodies to help continue our project along. Based on the enthusiasm you have shown we thought that you might be interested in helping spread the word. We need people to help distribute posters and some guest writers for our Advance column.
Would any of you be interested in joining us for a coffee meeting to talk about how to move the project forward and to help it grow to new heights.
Fully appreciating that some of you cannot really leave your business, we are happy to have “coffee-time” at your place. Otherwise, we could meet up at the Collections Café at the Rossignol Centre, where Liz Brown is serving up her famous lattes and chais!
I’ve attached the latest article from the Advance and a copy of our Spring poster for your info. Don’t hesitate to contact me should you have any questions! I have cc’d Mark Sloan from J&H and Monica Howard from RBC, my co-conspirators in the Project, in case you wanted to approach them as well!

Coffee tins, a local project and money for charity. Read all about it.
The Kempt Lake Gallery Project
by
Grace Keating
We are collecting the larger sized coffee tins the ones that have about a 6" diameter and
stand about 6" tall for an experiment. We need well over 100 of them and so would love help
from the community.
Any brand metal coffee tins 6in tall x 6in diameter
Or large Heinz ketchup tins 6in x 6in
We are paying .50 cents each to the North Queens Environment and Recycling program
(through the school) and if anyone has a 'cause' we'll match that or give the funds to the NQ
Environment program.
When tins are collected and the experiment is done - we will then do an announcement and
publish photos of the project to let everyone in on it!
Thanks,
Grace
If you are going to save your tins for this project, please email
queenscommunitycalendar@gmail.com and let me know and I will pass on your info to Grace
so arrangements can be made to collect your tins.
Check out Kempt Lake Gallery. Click Here
I can't wait to find out what this is all about!!
